On May 22nd I was lucky enough to attend the media event and re-launch of the Authentics Skin and Lazer Centre in Somerset Mall. Now I’m usually quite sceptical about a spa in mall environments because how tranquil can it be, really? The Authentics Spa was quite a nice surprise. After a very yummy breakfast at Limnos (a hazelnut latte and a chocolate croissant, delish!) it was off to check out the swanky new and improved spa. I was greeted at the door and asked which blog I was from. Lo and behold, there was no nametag available for me (haha!) but that was a problem from neither of our sides so it was all good. One make shift name tag later and I was checking out (and taking pictures of) the lovely new store.
The front end (store end) is beautifully clean and shiny looking. It’s kind of like when Obi Wan met Jango Fett on that distant planet with tall aliens (I forget where and who) and white and shiny room environments, lol. If that’s a strange analogy, so be it but that’s what I thought of and it’s definitely a compliment. Star Wars space aliens aside, the atmosphere was really warm and inviting and everyone was ultra-friendly (could it be that it’s because it’s a media event?) but I found everyone that I asked questions to very accommodating and helpful. I even got to meet bloggers like Candice-Lee from In My Bag as well as the Health and Beauty ladies, Moira and Roxanne, from The Next 48 Hours.
Listening to Lizle Henning’s story of what the Authentics brand is about was really quite lovely. It’s something that women’s brands try to achieve or say that they’re after but yet, fail to deliver. I believe Lizle is on the right road and that her brand will be able to achieve it. What’s the goal? In a nutshell: empowering women, being true to themselves, leading authentic lifestyles and enabling them to be themselves as “women of substance in a sometimes frivolous industry”. Nice. By watching her staff members and chatting to some of them, she’s well on her way to achieving her goals. Her staff are so knowledgeable and in a consumer industry, knowledgeable and friendly, professional staff is a rarity.
Authentics stocks some really awesome brands like Nimue and Environ but it’s ultimately their partnership with Dermalogica or “Dreamalogica” as Sonette Donker put it, which got them on the road to the spa revamp. Authentics won a total spa makeover from Dermalogica as they were the top performing salon. Very cool and a prize well earned. The spa and store front looks amazing. With the prize came the additions of the Dermalogica Skin Bar as well as a Microzone treatment area which is upfront in the store. Naturally I went to play in the Skin Bar area 😉 It’s basically where you get to try out all the awesome Dermalogica goodies before you decide to buy any. You get to touch, feel and experience the fantabulousness that is Dermalogica. My therapist, Lizca, was nice enough to hand me some samples to try out at home as well.
After admiring the front end of the spa it was time to take a trip “backstage” to the Spa area. Remeber when I said I was sceptical about Spa’s in malls? If other’s could have it the same way as Authentics, that’d be a hit! Being in their treatment area was like a world unto itself. So calm and tranquil and you’re completely removed from the rest of the world and our crazy schedules. It is completely private. Once you’ve stepped behind the door you’re in Narnia, kiddos.
We were given a break down on some of the machines that they use for the lazer and microdermabrasion. I’ll do a follow up post on those machines. Each treatment room is a beautifully decadent purple and gunmetal striped room that is dimly lit with soft music playing to get you into a deep state of relaxation.
Once the tour of the spa side was over we checked out the Microzone treatment area (front end) which is basically where you can go and have a facial during your lunch hour. How great is that! It’s perfect for even the busiest of people.
Each media gal received a lekker voucher entitling us to some treatments namely a lazer session, a full Dermalogica facial as well as a Microzone facial. I cannot WAIT to use mine! Naturally there will be posts about all those treatments and experiences 😉
